Three different things get called "verification" on WhatsApp, and only one of them puts a badge in front of your customers.
Start free trial →The WhatsApp green tick is Official Business Account status, granted by Meta — not sold. It requires Meta business verification plus independent evidence that your brand is notable, which most small businesses cannot show. Meta's separate paid Meta Verified subscription is the other route to a badge. Meta unified its badges to blue in 2024.
Almost all the confusion here comes from three separate things sharing the word "verification". Sorting them out is most of the work, so start there.
| What it is | Visible to customers? | How you get it |
|---|---|---|
| Meta business verification — confirms your legal entity in Business Manager | No, invisible | Submit legal documents; usually reviewed quickly |
| Display name approval — makes your business name show instead of a phone number | Yes, but no badge | Name review against Meta's naming policy |
| Official Business Account badge — the "green tick" | Yes, a badge | Requested after business verification; needs notability |
| Meta Verified — paid subscription including a badge | Yes, a badge | Monthly subscription, subject to eligibility |
Business verification is the gate, not the prize. Plenty of businesses complete it, see nothing change on their profile, and assume something went wrong. Nothing went wrong — it simply is not a customer-facing status. It unlocks things like higher messaging limits, display name review, and the ability to request Official Business Account status.
The status people actually want is the badge, and that is the hardest one to get.
Mostly not. Meta unified its verification badges across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp to a single blue checkmark in 2024, so accounts verified since then generally display blue. The term "green tick" has stuck in India regardless, and you will still see it used by providers, in search results, and by Meta support staff informally.
What a given customer sees can vary by app version and account type, so do not treat badge colour as a reliable signal of anything. If someone is selling you a "green tick" in 2026, what they mean is Official Business Account status — assuming they can deliver it at all.
Meta's public documentation is thin on the specifics here, and that is worth saying plainly rather than papering over. Meta describes OBA as a status a business can request once business verification is complete, and states that approval depends on evidence the business is well known and recognised. Meta does not publish a numeric threshold. The commonly quoted "three to five press articles" figure comes from Business Solution Providers reporting what they see in practice, not from a published Meta rule — treat it as a useful rule of thumb, not a checklist item.
What is reasonably well established across Meta's own guidance and consistent provider reporting:
There is no application fee and no way to pay to shortcut the notability requirement. It is genuinely a brand-recognition test, which is why a well-run five-year-old business with no press coverage can be rejected while a younger, noisier consumer brand gets approved.
Business verification is the part you can actually control, and document mismatches cause most avoidable rejections. For India, providers consistently report these as accepted:
| Purpose | Accepted in India (commonly reported) |
|---|---|
| Proof of legal entity | Certificate of incorporation, GST registration certificate, or Udyam / MSME registration certificate |
| Proof of address | Recent utility bill, phone bill or bank statement in the business name, typically issued within the last 12 months |
| Proof of the phone number | A bill or document showing the business number, where requested |
| Domain / email | A business email on your own domain strengthens the application |
Business verification itself is often reviewed within a working day when documents are clean. Display name review and OBA review take longer and are far less predictable.
Meta Verified is Meta's paid subscription route to a badge. It bundles a verified badge with impersonation protection, account support and other perks, and it exists precisely because the OBA notability bar shut out businesses that were perfectly legitimate but not famous.
Meta announced in June 2024 that it was extending Meta Verified to WhatsApp Business users in India, Indonesia, Brazil and Colombia, and launched Meta Verified business subscription plans in India for Instagram and Facebook in July 2024. Plans are tiered, and prices differ by country, platform and tier. Published figures move around, so check Meta's own current pricing rather than a number quoted in an article — including this one.
Two caveats worth knowing before you subscribe. Availability and the exact feature set still vary by market and account type, so confirm what applies to a WhatsApp Business account in India specifically. And a subscription badge is a different signal from earned OBA status — useful for impersonation protection and customer confidence, but it is not the same thing, and the badge disappears if you stop paying.
Less than most people assume. The badge changes a trust signal; it does not change what you can do. You can run a shared team inbox, send approved templates and message customers at volume without it.
In practice, the thing that visibly changes how customers react is display name approval — seeing "Sharma Traders" instead of "+91 98xxx xxxxx" when a message arrives. That is achievable for an ordinary registered business with clean documents, unlike the badge. If you have limited time, spend it there first.
The other honest point: a badge on a number that takes six hours to reply does not help. Response speed and getting back to people at all move revenue more reliably than a checkmark does.
Meta unified its verification badges across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp to a blue checkmark in 2024, so newly verified accounts generally show blue rather than green. The status is still commonly called the green tick in India, and what you see can vary by app version and account type.
The Official Business Account badge cannot be bought — it is granted by Meta based on business verification and evidence that your brand is notable. Meta does sell a separate paid route, Meta Verified, which is a monthly subscription that includes a verified badge. Any third party promising to sell you an OBA badge is not able to deliver that.
Business verification confirms your legal entity inside Meta Business Manager and is invisible to your customers. The Official Business Account badge is a separate, customer-visible status that you request after business verification is complete. Passing business verification does not give you a badge.
Commonly accepted documents for India include a certificate of incorporation, GST registration certificate, or Udyam MSME certificate, plus a recent utility or phone bill in the business name for address confirmation. The legal name on the document must match the name entered in Meta Business Manager exactly.
The two most common reasons are insufficient notability — Meta wants independent evidence that your brand is well known, and paid press releases or advertorials do not count — and a display name that does not match the registered business name and how the brand appears elsewhere. Restricted industries are also generally excluded.
No. The badge affects trust signals, not capability. You can message customers, run a shared team inbox and send approved templates without it. Getting your display name approved so customers see your business name instead of a bare phone number matters more day to day than the badge does.
Verification is a Meta decision on Meta's timeline, and there is no provider who can accelerate the notability judgement. What you can control in the meantime is whether the conversations arriving on that number are handled well — whether every enquiry gets answered, whether anyone can see what was promised last week, and whether a customer's history survives a salesperson leaving.
If you are setting up on the API route anyway, a CRM with the WhatsApp inbox already in it means you are not separately building contact matching and conversation logging on top of Meta's pipe. That is what Pingo360 does: a two-way WhatsApp Business inbox and a website chat inbox, automatic email logging, sales pipeline, automation, reports, GST-compliant invoicing with the CGST/SGST/IGST split and UPI payment links, custom objects, team roles, CSV/JSON import and export, 2FA and daily backups. Flat ₹999/month with unlimited team members, no per-seat pricing, billed monthly via Razorpay, 14-day free trial with no card required.
To be clear about scope: Pingo360 is a CRM with a WhatsApp inbox. It does not grant, apply for, or influence Meta verification decisions, and no software can. Questions: [email protected].
